Student-Athlete of the Month
Darren Ream Senior Coalinga High School
Darren Ream (above), Coalinga High senior, hammers a backhand down the line. This month's FCA Student-Athlete honoree is Darren Ream.
Darren, Coalinga High Class of 2008, is the #1 player on the Horned Toads Varsity tennis team. While he is a highly accomplished and competitive tennis player, Darren also played cornerback for a year on the football team. His time on the court is not limited to school competition; Darren recently won Boys Singles at the Copper River Tennis Championships.
Despite the time demands of tennis, he has excelled in the classroom; Darren carries an impressive 3.71 GPA. He was honored as the Wendy's High School Heisman School Representative from Coalinga. Darren is particularly interested in Biology; Not surprisingly for a high school male, he is keen about dissection (thankfully, all dead material).
Darren has attended Coalinga's huddle since he arrived on campus as a freshman. He cites the huddle as an opportunity for evangelism; A non-threatening place for him to bring friends to hear God's Word. While Darren accepted Christ as his Savior in his youth, it was his freshman year that his relationship with the Lord became particularly meaningful.
Darren puts feet to his faith. This past summer, he joined his church on a mission trip to Mexico.
He quickly names his dad as his spiritual mentor; He has had a significant impact on Darren's spiritual life as a positive role model as well as his guidance when Darren's faces trials and/or troubles. Darren's observations serve as a sobering and encouraging reminder to all of us fathers trying to raise our children in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.
What else should you know about Darren? He thinks Tiger Woods is the Cat's Meow because he remains humble and honorable despite his dominance of the golf world. Darren lives and dies with his Denver Broncos and Oregon State Beavers. His iPod has a potpourri of music; Except rap! His favorite group is "Falling Up". Favorite movie? The timeless classic "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"...seems to be the only silly thing Darren is attracted to as his life and actions portray a seriousness about life and faith that is an example to us all.
Join us in congratulating Darren as this month's Student-Athlete Honoree!

FCA Gets A “Chukker” Out Of Polo
Area Director Sandy Brown Gets An Education in Polo... Horses can swim???
By Sandy Brown
Many people may not know what a “chukker” is, but now thanks to two new FCA Huddles, I do! A chukker is a period of play during the polo match. There are six chukkers of play in the usual game—each lasting seven minutes, thirty seconds. These wonderful fact and many more about polo I learned during the first annual FCA Polo Exhibition held in Clovis California benefiting Sierra High and Foothill Middle Schools.
The event was the dream child of Booster club members that are avid polo players with many years of experience playing all over the world. With about 40 carloads of spectators the event was a huge success and gave the new huddles and booster club a nice “boost” in their finances to do lots more ministry in the area! The group is planning to repeat the event next year and is excited about the buzz this year created. I think I even feel more cultured as a result of attending.
